An introductory event took place at Jonas Jablonskis Gymnasium

2010/10/05

On Tuesday an introductory event of the Comenius international project “Equal by Law, but not in Reality” took place at Jonas Jablonskis Gymnasium and it started a phase of project work in Lithuania.

The event coincided with the International Teacher’s Day, thus the teachers and the guests were applauded and invited to the school hall. All guest and gymnasium teachers were greeted and congratulated by the city Vice Mayor Loreta Kekienė.

“Jonas Jablonskis Gymnasium is well known for its foreign language teaching traditions. By overcoming the language barrier we all gain some international experience, which is invaluable. It is so wonderful that the gymnasium takes part in the projects that coincide with our city’s strategy to encourage international cooperation,” said the vice mayor.

“Comenius” is a two-year international school cooperation project the aims of which are to reveal, study and analyse the cases of inequality in the communities of each country, to compare the received results and to share the acquired experience with other countries, to look for possible solutions, to encourage a positive attitude towards the equality of human rights, to gain more experience and present it in a booklet in different languages. While carrying out this project, pupils and their teachers meet in each of the seven countries, plan their work and share their experience.

This is the project in which Jonas Jablonskis Gymnasium pupils and teachers together with partners from six other European countries have been working for two years. During the first week of October a meeting of all seven countries, in which the teachers from Northern Ireland, England, Spain, Poland, Germany, Turkey and Lithuania are going not only to survey the accomplished tasks but also to plan further activities of the project, is planned to take place in Kaunas.

The guests from foreign countries are going to get acquainted with the gymnasium community, to take part in the debates with the members of Jonas Jablonskis Gymnasium debate club about the right to the freedom of speech, to plant an oak symbolizing cooperation, and furthermore, they are going to pay a visit to the Seimas and are going to discuss human rights with the Member of Seimas prof. Marija Ausrine Pavilioniene.

Visit to Lithuanian Parliament

On Wednesday October 6, the various delegations of our project visited the Lithuanian parliament. During this visit we had the opportunity to meet with the professor Ausrine Paviloniene, Member of Parliament and renowned human rights advocate in her country. The discussion we had on “Human Rights in Lithuania” was really a very interesting one and led to one of the highlights of our visit to Vilnius and Lithuania.

We would like to use this short report to thank our colleagues of Jonas Jablonskis Gymansium for organizing this visit and, of course Ausrine Paviloniene for her time.

Visit to Kaunas (Lithuania)

Ačiū Kauno

Visit to Kaunas (Lithuania)

As announced in our previous post from 5th to 8th October we went to the first meeting of the school year which was held in Kaunas (Lithuania). Our fellows of Jonas Jablonskis Gymnasium made sure that everything was perfectly organized.
At the meeting, apart from evaluating again what has been done so far, we planned the activities for the current school year and upcoming meetings in Frisoythe (Germany) and Lodz (Poland). Also, we decided to work on the most repeated issues raised in the research done last year. Therefore, we will focus our activities on these issues in the coming months
1. Social background and the inequalities in education
2. Disabled issues (Mentally and physically: are they accepted by society in everyday life?
3. Gender discrimination – is this found in every part of society?
4. Should we all have the freedom of speech? ( e.g. should there be respect for all political ideas)

Kaunasko bisitaldia (Lituania

Aurreko sarreran berri ematen genuenez, urriaren 5etik 8ra ikasturte honetako lehenengo bilerara joan ginen. Mitina Kaunasen (Lituanian) egin zen. Jonas Jablonskis Gymnasiumeko kideek ezin hobeki antolatu zuten dena.
Mitinean, orain arte egindakoa ebaluatzeaz gain, ikasturteko jarduerak eta hurrengo mitinak, Frisoythen (Alemania) y Lodzen (Polonian), planifikatu genituen. Bestalde, aurtengo kurtsoan zehar iazko ikasturteko lanetan gehien errepikatzen ziren gaietan zentratuko gara;
1. Social background and the inequalities in education
2. Disabled issues (Mentally and physically: are they accepted by society in everyday life?
3. Gender discrimination – is this found in every part of society?
4. Should we all have the freedom of speech? ( e.g. should there be respect for all political ideas)

Visita a Kaunas (Lituania)

1. Social background and the inequalities in education
2. Disabled issues (Mentally and physically: are they accepted by society in everyday life?
3. Gender discrimination – is this found in every part of society?
4. Should we all have the freedom of speech? ( e.g. should there be respect for all political ideas)

Nor zen Jonas Jablonskis?

Nor zen Jonas Jablonskis?
Jonas Jablonskis gure proiektu kide lituaniarren ikastetxearen izena da. Baina, nor zen Jonas Jablonskis?

Hizkuntzalari lituaniar oso ospetsua izan zen. Kaunasen hil zen 1930. urtean 70 urte zituela eta lituaniera modernoaren aitatzat hartzen dute askok. Ikastetxearen esparruan, bere etxea kontserbatzen da eta museo bat da gaur egun.

Gogora dezakegu Lituaniera Baltiko Itsasoaren ondoan hitz egiten ziren hizkuntza zaharren aztarna dela. Gaur egun Letoniera eta Lituaniera dira bizirik mantentzen diren bakarrak.

MEETING IN KAUNAS

Next week the first meeting of this school year will take place in Kaunas. All partners well meet there and we will design the work to be done until June. Also we will assess what has been done in recent months. We will go to Lithuania with the enthusiasm and good wishes that this common project requires: ready to work!

ANALYSIS OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS IN OUR OWN COMMUNITY

This is the report made at the end of the 2009-2010 course on equality and human rights in our community. It’s addressed in particular to the situations of inequality. This information will form the basis for the work of the coming months.

Pasa den ikasturtearen bukaeran, jarraian dagoen txostena prestatu genuen. Bertan giza eskubideen eta ezberdintasun sozialen egoera aztertzen dira. Lan hau, hurrengo hilabetetako lanaren oinarria izango da.

Este es el informe que se envió a todos los socios a finales del pasado curso. En él se tratan de detectar las situaciones de desigualdad en nuestra comunidad. Este trabajo servirá de base para el trabajo de los próximos meses.

.

ANALYSIS OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS IN OUR OWN COMMUNITY (MENDEBALDEA, Vitoria-Gasteiz)

ACTIVITIES:
We carried out three activities to assess the situation of Human Rights in our community:
1. Students prepared thirteen questions to make a diagnosis of the situation of Human Rights. Each of them interviewed ten people and we present the conclusions on a chart.
2. Students interviewed volunteers from several non-governmental organizations which work on behalf of physically or mentally handicapped people.
3. Students had to spot some news appeared on the local or national newspapers which showed violations of Human Rights and they had to translate them into English.

CONCLUSIONS:
1) Diagnosis based on a questionnaire:

Area People concerned about
Discrimination against immigrants 84 %
Discrimination against ideas or religion 83 %
Equality of opportunities 78,2 %
Arbitrary interference with people’s privacy 77,9 %
Equality before the law 77,2 %
Respect for workers’ rights 75,5 %
Right to life 72,6 %
Equal rights for men and women 57,8 %

Same opportunities for all political options 48, 9 %
Right to take part in elections for all political parties 48,4 %
Practice of torture. 44,3 %
Equality of opportunities in education 23,8 %

2) The analysis and making contact with various NGOs (Oxfam, Amnesty International, ONCE…) chosen freely by the students have focused on organizations working for equality of different types of physical and mental disabilities, human rights and the fight against poverty.

3) We paid attention to the news appeared on the newspapers reflecting violation of Human Rights. Most of the news selected dealt with genre violence which related killings of women perpetrated by men. Some others showed discrimination against immigrants, especially female immigrants.
